Everything you need to pick the right Angola eSIM in 2026: how Unitel and Movicel compare, coverage centered on Luanda, install steps, and how much data a trip needs.

In Angola, usable 4G is concentrated in Luanda and the provincial capitals such as Lobito and Lubango, and the Namib and the remote interior can leave you with no signal at all. Angola, on southern Africa's Atlantic coast, centers on the fast-growing capital Luanda, with waterfalls, deserts and a long coastline beyond. Staying connected runs on good data for maps and messaging, and an eSIM is a clean way to get it without a local SIM purchase. Install before you fly, land in Luanda, and your phone connects when it finds a local network.
Unitel is still the operator most Angolans carry, but it no longer tops the speed tables. In nPerf's 2026 Angola barometer, which covers April 2025 to March 2026, Africell took first place on overall score ahead of Unitel, even though Unitel measured slightly faster average downloads (16.81 Mbps against 15.82 Mbps). Africell's edge came from lower latency and better web browsing results. Movicel, the third licensed operator, was not ranked in that edition.
For a visitor, the practical reading is that both leading networks deliver everyday 4G speeds in Luanda, good enough for maps, WhatsApp and photo uploads, but well below what you may be used to in Europe or North America. Video calls work best on hotel Wi-Fi. The networks your plan can use are listed in each plan's details.
International flights no longer land at the old Quatro de Fevereiro airport in the city. TAAG Angola Airlines moved all its international routes to the new Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport (NBJ), in Icolo e Bengo, on October 19, 2025, so the drive into central Luanda is long and often slow in traffic.
That long transfer is where an eSIM installed at home pays off. You can message your hotel or driver, track the route on a map and order a ride as soon as you clear immigration, instead of looking for a phone shop in the terminal. Ride-hailing apps such as Yango, Heetch and T'Leva operate in Luanda, and all of them need data to book and follow a car.
A travel eSIM covers data only, so there is no Angolan number for SMS codes, calls from a ride-hailing driver or local payment apps. Multicaixa Express, the payment app many shops and services use, is tied to an Angolan bank account, so visitors usually pay in cash or by card anyway. Drivers on Yango or Heetch often prefer to call, so chat in the app or on WhatsApp instead.
A common two-week route starts with four or five days in Luanda (Ilha de Luanda, the Fortaleza de São Miguel, a day on the Mussulo peninsula), flies or drives south to Benguela and Lobito, then climbs to Lubango for the Cristo Rei viewpoint and the hairpin road down the Serra da Leba toward Namibe.
If your trip is mostly Luanda business meetings with video calls, plan for more, or keep the calls on hotel Wi-Fi.
Angola is a relatively pricey data market, so a travel eSIM saves the hassle of a local purchase. Simsima runs on the local networks. Here is Simsima's Angola plan pricing:
Because Angola is a pricier, less competitive market, plan sizes are more modest. Simsima's Angola lineup covers the common sizes; pick the allowance that matches your trip and lean on hotel Wi-Fi in Luanda for bigger downloads.
Overland travelers often pair Angola with Namibia through the Santa Clara and Oshikango border, or fly on from Luanda to Kinshasa, Windhoek or Johannesburg. A single-country Angola plan stops working once you cross the border, so for a multi-country trip compare one plan per country with a multi-country plan that lists every country on your route. The options below show what is available for Angola's neighbors and the wider region.
Before you buy, it also helps to know that buying a physical SIM in Angola means a visit to an operator branch with your passport, and that shop staff mostly speak Portuguese. The sector is regulated and supervised by INACOM, the Angolan communications institute.
Installation takes a couple of minutes and is best done at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. The plan activates on its own when it connects to a local network on arrival, so the validity window does not start early.
Yes. A travel eSIM connects to Angolan 4G networks like a physical SIM would, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Install it at home on Wi-Fi; it activates when it connects to a local network after landing in Luanda.
In nPerf's barometer for April 2025 to March 2026, Africell ranked first on overall score and Unitel second, with Unitel slightly ahead on average download speed. Unitel has the larger customer base. The networks a given plan uses are shown in its details.
There is no Angolan number, so SMS codes and calls from drivers will not reach the eSIM; use in-app chat or WhatsApp. Coverage is thin in the Namib, Iona National Park and on long interior roads, and hotspot use depends on the plan you pick.
International flights now arrive at the new Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport, far from central Luanda. Rather than counting on a phone shop in the terminal, install a travel eSIM before you fly, or buy a Unitel or Africell SIM later at a branch in the city with your passport.
Portuguese is the official language and English is limited in phone shops, which is one reason many visitors set up an eSIM before leaving home. Installation happens on your phone in your own language.
For Angola alone, a single-country plan from the comparison table is the simplest choice. If you continue to Namibia, Zambia or South Africa, check whether a multi-country plan covers every country on your route, or buy one plan per country.
