Brunei's three mobile brands, DST, imagine and Progresif, all run on one shared national network with 5G since 2023, so coverage is dense along the coast and only thins in the Temburong rainforest. Brunei is a small, wealthy sultanate on the island of Borneo, home to the golden-domed mosques of Bandar Seri Begawan, the water village of Kampong Ayer and pristine rainforest. Getting around runs on good data for maps and messaging, and an eSIM is the cleanest way to get it: install before you fly, land at Brunei International, and your phone connects the moment it finds a local network.
Key takeaways
- Brunei’s mobile brands are DST, imagine and Progresif, all running on the shared national network operated by UNN, with 4G and 5G in the populated areas
- The country is small and developed, so connectivity is dependable around the capital and towns
- Simsima offers capped data plans on the local networks, from light packs to larger monthly allowances
- 5G has been available nationwide since June 2023, launched jointly by the three operators and UNN
- A single mid-size plan comfortably covers a short trip, with hotel Wi-Fi filling gaps
DST, imagine and Progresif: three brands, one UNN network
Brunei's mobile market looks like a three-way choice, but the masts underneath are shared. On September 1, 2019, Unified National Networks took over all the network infrastructure previously run by DST, TelBru, Progresif and Brunei International Gateway, as the company states on its About page. DST, imagine (TelBru's retail brand) and Progresif now sell plans and SIM cards on top of that single wholesale network.
For a visitor this simplifies things: whichever brand a travel eSIM roams on, it reaches the same towers in Bandar Seri Begawan, Kuala Belait and Seria. Differences between the three come down to their retail offers, not to where the signal reaches.
Registering a prepaid SIM in Brunei: original passport required
Every prepaid SIM in Brunei has to be registered. The regulator AITI's registration guidelines list a valid original passport as the document visitors and tourists must present, either in person at the provider's or an authorized reseller's store, or online through the provider's own platform.
That is quick at a DST, imagine or Progresif counter in the capital, but it does mean a stop with your passport before the line works. A travel eSIM installed at home connects to the network after you land at Brunei International Airport, with the trade-off that it carries data only and no +673 number.
Signal from Kampong Ayer to Ulu Temburong
The places most visitors spend their time are well served: the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the riverfront in Bandar Seri Begawan, the stilt houses of Kampong Ayer across the Brunei River, the Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque in Gadong, and the oil towns of Seria and Kuala Belait to the west.
Temburong is the exception. The Temburong Bridge now links it to the capital by road, but once you leave Bangar for Ulu Temburong National Park, longboat transfers and the canopy walk take you deep into rainforest where coverage fades. Download offline maps and save your lodge's directions before setting off.

Simsima's full Brunei lineup runs from small packs up to larger monthly allowances on the local networks. Because visits are usually short and hotels have Wi-Fi, a 1 to 3 GB plan is enough for most trips, with more for longer stays.
A three-day stopover: how much data Brunei takes
A typical short stay pairs two days in Bandar Seri Begawan with an overnight trip to Ulu Temburong National Park, often as a stopover between flights.
- Ride-hailing, maps and mosque visiting hours in the capital: about 0.5 GB
- WhatsApp with guides, the lodge and your hotel, plus browsing: about 0.5 GB
- Photos from Kampong Ayer and the rainforest, uploaded once back in town: 0.5 to 1 GB
That comes to about 1.5 to 2 GB, so a small or mid-size capped plan fits. Hotel Wi-Fi handles anything heavy in the evening.
Before you board for BWN: installing the profile
Installation takes a couple of minutes and is best done at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. The plan activates on its own when it connects to a local network on arrival, so the validity window does not start early.
- Buy your Brunei plan on Simsima and open the confirmation with your QR code
- On your phone, go to Settings, then Mobile or Cellular Data, and choose Add eSIM
- Scan the QR code or use the one-tap install link, then label the plan Brunei
- Keep your home line as default for calls and texts, and set the eSIM for data
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only, then land in Brunei and go online
Temburong gaps and the missing +673 number
- No +673 number: the eSIM carries data only, so a guide or a restaurant that wants to call you needs your home number or WhatsApp
- Little or no signal deep in Ulu Temburong National Park and on the river transfers
- Tethering a laptop during a transit stopover depends on the plan, and the phone itself must be unlocked and eSIM-capable
Combining Brunei with Sabah and Sarawak
Brunei is surrounded by Malaysian Borneo, and many travelers arrive overland from Miri in Sarawak or continue by ferry or road toward Kota Kinabalu in Sabah. A Brunei plan stops at the border, and near the crossings a phone can latch onto a Malaysian network before you have passed immigration. If Borneo is the wider trip, a separate Malaysia plan or a regional plan that lists both countries keeps you covered on each side.
Brunei eSIM FAQ
Yes. WhatsApp works normally in Brunei and is the usual way guides, drivers and many hotels keep in touch with visitors. A data-only travel eSIM is enough to use it.
You get no +673 number for local calls, and coverage fades deep in Ulu Temburong National Park. A layover traveler with a carrier-locked phone cannot install it either.
Yes. AITI's registration rules require visitors to present a valid original passport, in a store or through the provider's online platform. A travel eSIM installed before the trip avoids that step.
DST, imagine and Progresif all run on the same national network operated by UNN, so coverage is the same whichever one your eSIM uses. Each Simsima plan lists its network in the plan details.
That depends on your home operator, which handles the conversion for its own line. A travel eSIM is separate: it is added alongside your existing SIM, so your home number stays on your phone for calls and texts.
Brunei numbers use the country code +673 followed by seven digits. A travel eSIM does not come with one, so share your home number or a WhatsApp contact instead.
