Plan for long offline stretches in Tajikistan: Tcell and Megafon give usable 4G in Dushanbe, Khujand and Khorog, but the Pamir Highway, the high passes and the Wakhan Corridor have little to no coverage. Tajikistan is a rugged Central Asian country of soaring mountains, home to the capital Dushanbe and the legendary Pamir Highway through the roof of the world. Getting around the cities and long mountain roads runs on good data for maps and messaging, and an eSIM is the cleanest way to get it: install before you fly, land at Dushanbe, and your phone connects when it finds a local network. This guide compares the best eSIM options for Tajikistan, explains what Tcell and Megafon deliver, and helps you pick the right plan.
Key takeaways
- Tajikistan’s networks are Tcell, Megafon and Babilon, with good 4G in the cities and main towns
- Coverage is good in Dushanbe and the towns; the high Pamirs and remote valleys are largely offline
- Simsima offers capped data plans on the local networks, and Tajikistan is an affordable data market
- Because much of a Pamir trip is offline, a 2 to 3 GB plan is enough for many travelers
- A travel eSIM means you arrive connected without a local SIM purchase
Tcell, MegaFon, ZET-MOBILE and Babilon: local tariffs in somoni
Tajikistan has four mobile brands: Tcell, MegaFon Tajikistan, ZET-MOBILE and Babilon-Mobile. Local prepaid tariffs are cheap and generous. On MegaFon Tajikistan's tariff page, checked in October 2026, a monthly plan with 80 GB and 50 minutes costs 160 TJS, and one with 30 GB and 250 minutes costs 130 TJS. ZET-MOBILE lists its Intihob 30 tariff at 30 somoni with 1,000 MB of internet and unlimited on-net calls.
To get one you visit an operator shop in Dushanbe, Khujand or Khorog with your passport. That suits a long stay, but the plans are monthly and the shops are in town, not at every border post. A travel eSIM installed at home works as soon as you land in Dushanbe or cross the border, and the tables below compare what providers charge.
The Pamir Highway, the Wakhan and the Fann Mountains: offline stretches
Dushanbe, Khujand in the north, Istaravshan and Khorog, the gateway to the Pamirs, have usable 4G, and signal follows the main roads near settlements. The Fann Mountains are patchy: there is coverage in Panjakent and some villages, but little at Iskanderkul lake or along the Seven Lakes valley beyond the last village.
East of Khorog, coverage becomes the exception. The Wakhan valley villages of Ishkashim and Langar have intermittent signal at best, and the high plateau of the Pamir Highway between Murghab, Karakul and the Ak-Baital pass is offline for long stretches. Download offline maps, homestay contacts and border details in Dushanbe or Khorog, and treat any signal on the road as a bonus.

Simsima's full Tajikistan lineup runs from small packs up to larger monthly allowances on the local networks. Because much of a Pamir trip is offline, a 2 to 3 GB plan is enough for many travelers, covering the towns and messaging, with more for longer city stays.
Data for two weeks on the Pamir Highway
A classic overland trip: two days in Dushanbe, the long drive to Khorog along the Afghan border, three days through the Wakhan valley via Ishkashim and Langar, then north across the plateau to Murghab and Karakul, ending at the Kyzyl-Art pass into Kyrgyzstan.
- Maps, messaging and bookings in Dushanbe and Khorog: about 0.5 GB
- WhatsApp and Telegram with drivers and homestays whenever you pass through a village with signal: about 0.5 GB
- Photo uploads and a few calls home in Dushanbe and Khorog: about 1 GB
With so much of the route offline, 2 to 3 GB is usually enough, the smaller plans in the capped table. A longer city stay in Dushanbe calls for a bigger plan.
Setting up your eSIM before flying to Dushanbe
Installation takes a couple of minutes and is best done at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. The plan activates on its own when it connects to a local network on arrival, so the validity window does not start early.
- Buy your Tajikistan plan on Simsima and open the confirmation with your QR code
- On your phone, go to Settings, then Mobile or Cellular Data, and choose Add eSIM
- Scan the QR code or use the one-tap install link, then label the plan Tajikistan
- Keep your home line as default for calls and texts, and set the eSIM for data
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only, then land in Dushanbe and go online
Downsides of an eSIM in Tajikistan
- No Tajik number: the eSIM carries data only, so drivers and homestays who prefer a call will need your WhatsApp or Telegram
- Most of the Pamir Highway and the Wakhan valley are offline on every network
- Fewer travel eSIM providers cover Tajikistan than its neighbors, so the choice of plans is narrower
- Sharing one connection with fellow travelers in a Pamir jeep depends on the plan's hotspot terms, and your phone must take an eSIM and be unlocked
Crossing to Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan
Most Pamir trips end by crossing the Kyzyl-Art pass to Sary-Tash and Osh in Kyrgyzstan, and many travelers come in from Samarkand through Panjakent. A Tajikistan plan stops working at the border, so add a plan for Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan; the options below cover the usual Central Asian neighbors.
Tajikistan eSIM FAQ
Yes, in Dushanbe, Khujand, Khorog and other covered areas. Install it at home, and it connects to a Tajik network when you land or cross the border, provided your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
You get no Tajik number, much of the Pamir Highway is offline on every network, and fewer providers cover the country. Hotspot use depends on the plan.
Local tariffs are cheap: MegaFon Tajikistan listed a monthly plan with 80 GB for 160 TJS in October 2026, and ZET-MOBILE a 30-somoni tariff with 1,000 MB. You need your passport and a visit to an operator shop.
Tcell and MegaFon have the widest coverage in Dushanbe and the main towns. The Tajik network behind each Simsima plan is shown in its details.
Mostly not. Khorog has 4G, but the Wakhan valley, Murghab and the high plateau have long offline stretches. Download offline maps beforehand.
About 2 to 3 GB is enough for a Pamir Highway trip, since most days are offline. Stay longer in Dushanbe and you will want more.
