Ukraine in 2026: read the travel advice before anything else

Russia's invasion continues, and the UK government's travel advice for Ukraine, updated on 2 October 2026, advises against all travel to Crimea, to within 50 km of the Belarus border, and to all regions except a group in the west. For Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, Lviv and parts of Volyn, Rivne and Zhytomyr, it advises against all but essential travel, and it warns that missile and drone attacks also reach the western regions.

Ukraine's airspace is closed, so people who do travel arrive by train or road, most often from Poland. Most visitors today are aid workers, journalists, business travelers and Ukrainians visiting family. Kyivstar, Vodafone and lifecell: speed and resilience

Ukraine's three networks kept working through the war, and the nPerf 2025 barometer for Ukraine, covering January to December 2025, ranks Kyivstar first with 67,244 nPoints and a download speed of 40.85 Mbps. Vodafone Ukraine is second at 32.82 Mbps, and lifecell third at 30.92 Mbps. All three run 4G in Kyiv, Lviv and the other cities.

Networks can still fail without warning. The UK safety advice recalls that a cyber attack on Kyivstar in December 2023 left its users without signal or internet and disrupted air raid apps, banks and card terminals, and it warns that cyber attacks could disrupt mobile and internet services again. EU roaming now covers Ukraine

Ukraine is one of the countries where the EU's Roam Like at Home regime applies, along with the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Moldova.
