Using Your eSIM in China
What the Great Firewall blocks, and why a travel eSIM behaves differently there.
Using Your eSIM in China
China filters internet traffic nationally. Google — including Gmail and Maps — plus Instagram, Facebook, X, WhatsApp and many news sites are blocked on local connections such as hotel Wi-Fi.
A travel eSIM connects through a network partner rather than a local Chinese carrier, and travellers often report reaching their usual services this way. We cannot promise it. The behaviour depends on the partner's routing, which we do not control and which can change without notice.
Practical Advice
If Services Are Blocked Anyway
Confirm you are actually on eSIM data and not on Wi-Fi — this is the usual explanation. If you are on eSIM data and still blocked, contact us with the specific service and we will check the routing for your plan.
