Is My Device Carrier-Locked?
How to check for a network lock on iPhone and Android, and what to do about it.
Is My Device Carrier-Locked?
An eSIM cannot be installed on a device that is locked to a carrier. Checking takes under a minute.
iPhone: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. It must read No SIM restrictions.
Android: Settings > About phone > SIM status, or dial the carrier's unlock check. Wording varies by manufacturer.
If the Device Is Locked
Only the original carrier can unlock it. Contact them and ask for a network unlock. Devices bought on a contract, or second-hand from someone who was on a contract, are commonly still locked.
The Trap After Unlocking
Some carriers keep eSIM support disabled for a security period even after unlocking the device for physical SIMs. If your phone was unlocked recently and eSIM installation still fails, go back to the carrier and ask them specifically to lift the eSIM restriction.
Jailbroken and Rooted Devices
eSIM profiles will not install on jailbroken iPhones or rooted Android devices. There is no workaround.
