Using iMessage With Your eSIM
iMessage works over your eSIM data connection. It does need a reset after installation, because iOS binds it to whichever line was active before.
Reset iMessage
With the email address selected, iMessage sends and receives over data alone — no home carrier connection needed, and no roaming charges from your usual operator.
When You Get Home
To go back to messaging from your normal number: Settings > Messages > Send & Receive, and check your phone number again.
What This Does Not Cover
Regular SMS to non-Apple recipients still travels over your home carrier's network, and your carrier's roaming charges apply. Simsima data plans do not carry SMS. If you need texts abroad, use an internet messaging app or check whether your plan includes calls and texts on its plan page.
