Buying a Colombian SIM: passport and the IMEI check

Colombia's telecoms regulator, the CRC, explains that a tourist who buys a SIM from a local operator should check that the phone is approved in Colombia. If it is not, the operator sends an SMS warning that the device will be blocked after 45 calendar days, and the owner can request approval online at no cost during that time (CRC opinion 522794, 2022). The same document states that the CRC has not ordered any immediate blocking of phones brought in by tourists for personal use.

How to set up your Colombia eSIM before landing in Bogotá

Activating a Colombia eSIM takes about five minutes if you do it right. The key is to install the profile before you fly while you are still on home Wi-Fi, then only switch it on when you arrive.
