Signal on Dominica follows the coast and the towns, from Roseau to Portsmouth, and fades in the rainforest around the Boiling Lake trail, so a modest data plan plus offline maps covers most trips. Dominica, the Nature Isle, is a rugged Caribbean island of rainforest, boiling lakes, hot springs and world-class diving, centered on the capital Roseau. Staying connected between hikes, dives and drives runs on good data for maps and messaging, and an eSIM is the cleanest way to get it: install before you fly, land at Douglas-Charles Airport, and your phone connects the moment it finds a local network.
Key takeaways
- Dominica has two mobile networks: Flow and Digicel, both delivering dependable 4G in the populated areas
- Coverage is good around Roseau, Portsmouth and the west coast; the mountainous rainforest interior thins out
- Simsima offers capped data plans on the local networks, from light packs to larger monthly allowances
- Much of Dominica is wild rainforest, so download offline maps for hikes and interior drives
- English is the official language, so setup and support are straightforward
Flow or Digicel: buying a SIM in Roseau
Dominica has two mobile operators, Flow and Digicel, licensed by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission in Roseau, which works within the Eastern Caribbean framework of ECTEL. Both have stores in Roseau and Portsmouth and sell prepaid SIMs and top-ups through small shops across the island. Expect to show your passport when you buy.
Prices are in Eastern Caribbean dollars, which the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank keeps pegged at EC$2.70 to US$1. A local SIM makes sense for a long stay or if you want a Dominican number for guides and taxis. The catch for short trips is timing: Douglas-Charles Airport sits on the east coast, roughly an hour's drive from Roseau, and you arrive without data unless you have set something up beforehand. The comparison tables below show what eSIM providers charge instead.

Simsima's full Dominica lineup runs from small packs up to larger monthly allowances on the local networks. For a week of hiking and diving with daily social media, 2 to 3 GB is comfortable, since accommodation has Wi-Fi; heavier users should look at 5 GB or more.
Boiling Lake, Scotts Head and the dive sites: where signal ends
Signal follows the coastal road. Roseau, Portsmouth, the west-coast villages from Scotts Head to Mero, and the resort strip around Castle Comfort are covered, as is the Cabrits National Park near Portsmouth. The east coast around Calibishie and the Kalinago Territory has service in the villages but with gaps along the road.
The interior is a different story. The Boiling Lake hike through Morne Trois Pitons National Park, the Valley of Desolation, Middleham Falls and much of the Waitukubuli National Trail have little or no coverage. Download offline maps, tell your guesthouse your route, and hike the Boiling Lake with a guide. Dive and whale-watching boats off the west coast usually keep a signal close to shore, then lose it farther out.
Combining Dominica with Guadeloupe and Martinique
Dominica sits between two French islands, and the L'Express des Iles ferry links Roseau with Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. Many visitors combine two or three islands in one trip.
A Dominica plan covers Dominica only. If your trip includes the French islands, you can buy a separate plan for each, or look at a Caribbean plan that lists all three; the guide linked below compares the options. Visitors with an EU phone plan should note that Guadeloupe and Martinique are part of the EU, so their home plan may cover the French islands while Dominica still needs its own data.
Downsides of an eSIM in Dominica
- No Dominican number: tour guides, taxi drivers and some guesthouses arrange pickups by phone, so share your WhatsApp number in advance
- Same towers as a local SIM: the rainforest interior is offline whether you use an eSIM or a Flow or Digicel SIM
- Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked before you fly to Douglas-Charles
- Hotspot use depends on the plan, worth checking if you work from a villa
How to install your Dominica eSIM
Installation takes a couple of minutes and is best done at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. The plan activates on its own when it connects to a local network on arrival, so the validity window does not start early.
- Buy your Dominica plan on Simsima and open the confirmation with your QR code
- On your phone, go to Settings, then Mobile or Cellular Data, and choose Add eSIM
- Scan the QR code or use the one-tap install link, then label the plan Dominica
- Keep your home line as default for calls and texts, and set the eSIM for data
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only, then land in Dominica and go online

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. You buy a Dominica plan on Simsima, install it at home on Wi-Fi with the link or QR code sent by email, and it activates when your phone connects to Flow or Digicel after you land. There is no store visit or passport check.
Yes, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. The eSIM connects to a local network just like a roaming SIM. Each Simsima plan lists the networks it uses in the plan details.
You do not get a Dominican phone number, so calls and SMS from guides go to your home number or WhatsApp. Coverage is the same as a local SIM, so interior hikes stay offline. Sharing data with a laptop at your villa depends on the plan.
Turn off data roaming on your home line, so your home carrier does not charge you, and turn it on for the travel eSIM line, which needs roaming enabled to connect in Dominica.
Not on the eSIM itself: it is data-only, with no phone number. Your usual number stays on your main SIM, and you can take calls over WhatsApp or FaceTime using the eSIM's data.
For a week of hiking, diving and messaging, 2 to 3 GB is usually enough, since much of the day is spent offline and most accommodation has Wi-Fi. If you post a lot of video or work remotely, choose 5 GB or more.
