Antel, Uruguay's state operator, has the widest reach, and with Claro and Movistar it keeps 4G steady from Montevideo's ramblas to the beaches of Punta del Este. Uruguay pairs the riverside capital Montevideo with the glamorous beaches of Punta del Este, colonial Colonia del Sacramento and a laid-back coastline of surf towns. Getting around runs on good data for maps and messaging, and an eSIM is the cleanest way to get it: install before you fly, land at Carrasco International, and your phone connects the moment it finds a local network.
Key takeaways
- Uruguay’s networks are Antel (the state operator with the widest reach), Claro and Movistar, with good 4G and 5G in the cities
- Coverage is strong in Montevideo, the coast and the main towns; the rural interior thins out
- Simsima offers capped data plans on the local networks, and Uruguay is a reasonably priced market
- Coverage is reliable across Montevideo, Punta del Este, Colonia and the coastal resorts
- The country is compact and coastal, so a single mid-size plan usually covers a full trip
Antel, Claro and Movistar: a state operator ahead on 5G
Uruguay's mobile market is led by Antel, the state-owned operator, with Claro and Movistar as the private alternatives. Antel was early on 5G: in April 2019, it and Nokia switched on what they described as the first commercial 5G network in Latin America, starting with base stations in Barra de Manantiales, near Punta del Este, according to Nokia's announcement. Today all three carry 4G across the cities and the coast.
The sector is regulated by URSEC, which also takes complaints about telecom services. A travel eSIM connects to the networks listed in its plan details; Simsima has no agreement with any Uruguayan operator.
Buying a local chip in Montevideo
Antel, Claro and Movistar sell prepaid chips in their own shops and in Montevideo's shopping centers. A local line brings a Uruguayan number, useful for a long stay or for apps that verify you by SMS. For a week or two, the travel eSIM in the tables below spares you the counter: it is installed at home and connects when you land in Montevideo, with your home number still on the phone.

Simsima's full Uruguay lineup runs from small packs up to larger monthly allowances on the local networks. For a week or two of coast and city with daily social media, 3 GB is comfortable, with more for longer stays or remote work.
Coverage from Colonia to Cabo Polonio
Montevideo, from Ciudad Vieja along the Rambla to Pocitos and Carrasco, has strong 4G, and the coast east through Piriápolis, Punta del Este and José Ignacio is well covered. Colonia del Sacramento, across the river from Buenos Aires, keeps a good signal in its historic quarter.
Farther up the Rocha coast, signal gets thinner. Cabo Polonio, reached by 4x4 truck across the dunes, has no connection to the power grid, so charge your phone and power bank before you go, and expect signal to be weaker than in town. Punta del Diablo and the Santa Teresa park have coverage in town and gaps on the beaches and trails. In the interior, around the estancias of Tacuarembó or Durazno, coverage follows the towns and main roads.
Ten days from Montevideo to the Rocha coast: data and apps
A typical trip spends three nights in Montevideo, a day in Colonia, two nights in Punta del Este and three on the Rocha coast. With ride-hailing in the city, maps on the coast road and photo sharing, ten days uses roughly 3 to 5 GB.
- Uber and Cabify: rides in Montevideo and Punta del Este
- Cómo Ir: Montevideo's official bus route planner
- PedidosYa: food delivery in the cities
- WhatsApp: posadas, estancias and restaurants confirm bookings this way
How to install your Uruguay eSIM before you land at Carrasco
Installation takes a couple of minutes and is best done at home on Wi-Fi before you fly. The plan activates on its own when it connects to a local network on arrival, so the validity window does not start early.
- Buy your Uruguay plan on Simsima and open the confirmation with your QR code
- On your phone, go to Settings, then Mobile or Cellular Data, and choose Add eSIM
- Scan the QR code or use the one-tap install link, then label the plan Uruguay
- Keep your home line as default for calls and texts, and set the eSIM for data
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only, then land at Carrasco International and go online
Arriving by ferry from Buenos Aires
Many visitors reach Uruguay by boat: ferries cross the Río de la Plata from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento and Montevideo several times a day. Your Uruguay plan only connects once your phone finds a Uruguayan network on arrival, and an Argentina plan stops working on the Uruguayan side. If your trip covers both countries, add an Argentina plan or choose a Latin America plan that lists both.

Uruguay eSIM FAQ
One with enough data for your trip on a network that covers the places you will visit. Antel has the widest reach; compare data, validity and price in the tables above and check the networks listed in each plan's details.
Yes. Antel launched Latin America's first commercial 5G network in 2019, and 5G is available in parts of Montevideo and the main towns. Whether you get it depends on the plan, your phone and local coverage.
Travel eSIMs are paid, prepaid plans. With Simsima, you can get a refund within 14 days if the eSIM has not been activated.
It is a digital SIM profile you download to your phone instead of inserting a plastic card. Your Uruguay travel eSIM works the same way: you install it with a QR code or link, and it connects to a Uruguayan network on arrival.
Yes. You top up the eSIM already on your phone from the Simsima website or app, with no new installation.
You have no Uruguayan number, so services that verify you by SMS on a local line will not work. Remote stretches of the Rocha coast and the interior have gaps whatever the plan, and your phone must be unlocked and eSIM-compatible.
