MTN and Airtel give Zambia its widest 4G coverage, from Lusaka to the Victoria Falls area at Livingstone, while game drives in South Luangwa and Kafue rely on lodge Wi-Fi or nothing at all. Zambia is a classic safari and adventure destination, from the thundering Victoria Falls at Livingstone to the wildlife of South Luangwa and the capital Lusaka. Staying connected between game drives and transfers runs on good data, and an eSIM is the cleanest way to get it, avoiding the in-person SIM registration visitors face. Install before you fly, land at Lusaka or Livingstone, and your phone connects when it finds a local network.
Key takeaways
- Zambia’s networks are MTN, Airtel and Zamtel, with MTN and Airtel offering the widest coverage and fastest data
- Coverage is good in Lusaka, Livingstone and the main towns; game parks and remote areas go offline
- Simsima offers capped data plans on the local networks, and Zambia is an affordable data market
- Coverage is reliable in Lusaka, Livingstone, Ndola and Kitwe; South Luangwa and the bush thin out
- A travel eSIM avoids the in-person SIM registration Zambia requires for local prepaid SIMs
MTN, Airtel and Zamtel: Zambia's three networks
Zambia has three mobile operators: MTN, Airtel and the state-owned Zamtel. MTN Zambia says it was the first to launch 4G and 5G in the country, and it lists eSIM and new SIM registration among its services. MTN and Airtel have the widest coverage in the towns and along the main roads, and a travel eSIM connects to whichever network is named in its plan details.
Local prepaid SIMs are cheap, and mobile money such as MTN MoMo and Airtel Money is widely used, but a new line has to be registered at an operator store or registration point, and MTN Zambia's registration page asks visitors for a foreign passport with a valid visa or permit. A travel eSIM installed before you fly skips that step and works as soon as you land in Lusaka or Livingstone, while your home number stays on the phone.
South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi and Kafue: offline by design
Most safari camps are deliberately remote. Zambia Tourism describes South Luangwa as a 9,050 km² park where the walking safari was born, reached by air through Mfuwe International Airport, with Proflight flying from Lusaka year-round, or by a 123 km road from Chipata that takes about two hours. Mfuwe has mobile signal; once you are out on game drives and walks, expect little or none.
The Lower Zambezi, Kafue and the Liuwa Plain are similar. Many lodges offer Wi-Fi in the main area, sometimes by satellite and often slow, so send messages and download maps in Lusaka, Livingstone or Mfuwe, and give your family the lodge's contact details before you head into the bush.

Simsima's full Zambia lineup runs from small packs up to larger monthly allowances on the local networks. Because much of a safari is offline, a 3 GB plan is enough for most trips, covering the towns, Victoria Falls and messaging, with more for longer stays.
How to install your Zambia eSIM
Installation takes a couple of minutes and is best done at home on Wi-Fi before you fly, and it sidesteps the in-person registration required for local SIMs. The plan activates on its own when it connects to a local network on arrival.
- Buy your Zambia plan on Simsima and open the confirmation with your QR code
- On your phone, go to Settings, then Mobile or Cellular Data, and choose Add eSIM
- Scan the QR code or use the one-tap install link, then label the plan Zambia
- Keep your home line as default for calls and texts, and set the eSIM for data
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only, then land in Zambia and go online
Victoria Falls from both sides: crossing into Zimbabwe or Botswana
Livingstone, on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls, has good coverage in town and at the falls entrance. Many visitors walk or drive across the Victoria Falls Bridge to see the Zimbabwean side, or take a day trip to Chobe National Park in Botswana via the Kazungula Bridge.
Near the border your phone can pick up Zimbabwean or Botswanan networks, and once you cross, a Zambia-only eSIM stops providing data. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM for those days. For a single day across the border, a short plan for that country is enough; for a longer southern Africa route, a regional Africa plan can cover all three countries if they are on its country list. Our Africa guide below compares the options.
Two weeks on safari with a stop at the falls: data budget
A typical first trip spends three or four nights in Livingstone for the falls and the Zambezi, a week split between South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi, and a night in Lusaka on the way in or out. Most of the mobile data goes on the town days: maps, WhatsApp with lodges and transfer drivers, photos and a few video calls.
- Town days in Livingstone and Lusaka: 200 to 400 MB a day
- Safari days in the parks: almost nothing, because there is little signal
- Uploading photos and videos once back in town: 0.5 to 1 GB
That adds up to about 3 to 4 GB for two weeks, which matches a small or mid-size capped plan in the table above. Choose more if you plan to work online from Lusaka.

Zambia eSIM FAQ
Yes, in areas with coverage. A Zambia eSIM connects to a local network listed in the plan details, as long as your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Install it at home and it activates when it connects after you land in Lusaka or Livingstone.
Converting your home SIM is a question for your home operator, and it is not needed for this trip. A travel eSIM is a separate line that you add alongside your existing SIM or eSIM, so your home number stays as it is.
Turn data roaming on for the Zambia eSIM line, because travel eSIMs connect as roaming lines, and turn it off on your home SIM so your home operator cannot charge you. Keep it off on the home line near the Zimbabwe and Botswana borders too.
A travel eSIM is data only, so you get no Zambian number for transfer drivers who call and no access to local mobile money. Coverage is limited or absent in the national parks whichever SIM you use, a Zambia-only plan stops at the border, and hotspot use depends on the plan.
Yes. The eSIM is added as a second line, so your home SIM stays active for texts and bank codes while the eSIM handles data.
