Japan isn't included in most UK mobile plans: only O2's Ultimate Plan and Three Your Way Complete cover it. On other O2 pay monthly plans, data stops until you add O2 Travel at £7 a day or a Zone 2 Bolt On from £9 for 1GB, and Vodafone pay monthly adds £8 on each day you use your phone there. giffgaff plans don't work in Japan: you pay 20p per MB from your credit or buy a Japan travel data add-on (as of 26 October 2026).
Key takeaways
- O2 pay monthly: O2 Travel at £7 a day for unlimited data at up to 2Mbps, or Bolt Ons from £9 for 1GB.
- Vodafone pay monthly: £8 a day in Japan, with your UK allowance. Pay as you go: Around the World Extras from £19.31 for 2GB, 100 minutes and 100 texts (£13.68 for 2GB data only on Pay as you go Plus).
- giffgaff plans don't work in Japan. Data costs 20p per MB from your credit unless you buy a Japan travel data add-on in the giffgaff app.
- Data is expensive elsewhere: EE £8 for 500MB, Sky Mobile £2.16 per MB, Tesco Mobile £5 per MB, SMARTY £1 per MB.
Is Japan included in UK roaming?
Rarely. Every UK network puts Japan in a worldwide zone, outside Europe. Two current plans include it (as of 26 October 2026, O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate, Three price guide):
- O2 Ultimate Plan, through the O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate: unlimited minutes, texts and data, with data speeds capped at 2Mbps.
- Three Your Way Complete, taken out or upgraded since 22 June 2025, which includes every Go Roam destination. Above 12GB of data a month abroad, Three adds a surcharge of 0.3p per MB if you still have UK data left.
On these plans, you have nothing to buy for Japan.
O2 roaming in Japan
O2 pay monthly: O2 Travel or a Bolt On
O2 puts Japan in Zone 2. Unless you're on an Ultimate Plan, O2 stops your data abroad until you add an option, so you pay nothing (as of 26 October 2026, O2 Data Roaming Bolt Ons, O2 Travel).
O2 Travel costs £7 a day, only on the days you use it. The charge starts when you make a call, send a text or use data, not when you receive a call or text, and covers 24 hours from that first use. Data is unlimited, at up to 2Mbps, and calls to the UK and within Japan are included. Add it in My O2 or text TRAVEL to 23336 before you go.
Zone 2 Data Roaming Bolt Ons give a set amount of data: £9 for 1GB, £20 for 3GB, £29 for 5GB. Add one in My O2 before you go, or from the link O2 texts you on arrival. Unused data rolls over to the end of your next billing month.
O2 Pay As You Go
O2 Pay As You Go has no Bolt Ons and no O2 Travel. Data in Japan costs £7.20 per MB: keep data roaming off and use Wi-Fi or an eSIM (O2 roaming rates by destination, O2 Data Roaming Bolt Ons).
Vodafone roaming in Japan
Vodafone pay monthly: £8 a day
Vodafone puts Japan in Zone D, which no Vodafone plan includes, not even Premier. On each day you make a call, send a text or use data in Japan, Vodafone adds £8 and you use your UK allowance (£6 a day on plans bought before 11 August 2021). Above the roaming fair use limit of 25GB per billing month, data costs £3.84 per GB. There's no data pass for Japan on pay monthly (as of 26 October 2026, Vodafone charges guide, Vodafone global roaming).
Vodafone pay as you go: Around the World Extras
On pay as you go, Japan is an Around the World destination, and data costs 12p per MB without an Extra. Around the World Extras cost £19.31 for 8 days (2GB, 100 minutes, 100 texts) and £30.84 for 15 days (4GB, 200 minutes, 200 texts); on Pay as you go Plus, where you need an Extra to roam, a data-only 8-day Extra gives 2GB for £13.68. An Extra starts when you buy it; once it ends, you can buy another (as of 26 October 2026, Vodafone global roaming, Vodafone Pay as you go price guide).
giffgaff in Japan
giffgaff puts Japan in its Rest of the world list, and your giffgaff plan doesn't work there. Calls, texts and data come out of your credit (giffgaff help). Without an add-on, giffgaff charges its Rest of the World rate of 20p per MB, though it says rates can differ by destination (giffgaff rates, add-ons, as of 26 October 2026).
giffgaff sells travel data add-ons for 23 destinations outside the EU, Japan included. A Japan add-on lasts 30 days from the day you buy it, and you can buy as many as you need. Add-ons are sold only in the giffgaff app, which shows the price (giffgaff travel data add-ons).
The credit spend cap stops you spending more than £45 of credit in a month, plans included, but it's off by default. Turn it on before you fly (credit spend cap).

Roaming or eSIM: what will your Japan trip cost?
The calculator asks whether your plan includes Japan. Answer "Yes" and it calculates nothing, only reminding you that your data allowance applies; answer "Not sure" and it calculates as if Japan weren't included. It takes the cheapest option that covers your trip, adding passes only where the network confirms you can buy them again (EE, O2 Bolt Ons, Three, Vodafone and VOXI Extras). Where the network doesn't say (EE Pay As You Go, iD Mobile), it counts one per period; where it limits purchases (Lyca Mobile Pay As You Go: five per add-on in any 30 days), no more than that. Either way, it says when that isn't enough data. With only a per-MB rate, it shows "More than £500" above that amount, and for Sky Mobile and Three Pay As You Go it stops at the spending cap.
What the other networks charge in Japan
EE
EE puts Japan in ROW Zone 3, which no EE plan includes; without a Roaming Pass there's no data. The Zone 3 pass costs £8 for 24 hours and gives 500MB with unlimited calls and texts, not your UK allowance. You can buy another once the 500MB is used, but only on arrival, from the link EE texts you (as of 26 October 2026, EE price guide, EE roaming costs). EE Pay As You Go add-ons run on UK days, midnight to midnight UK time (9am in Japan in UK winter, 8am in summer) (EE Pay As You Go price guide).
Three
Japan is a Go Roam Around the World Extra destination, included in Three Your Way Complete taken out or upgraded since 22 June 2025. On other plans, a daily charge starts with your first call, text or data use and unlocks your UK allowance for 24 hours: £8 if you joined or upgraded on or after 18 December 2025 (charged since 1 April 2026), £7 if you joined or upgraded between 1 October 2021 and 17 December 2025 or you're on a 24-month SIM Only Lite plan (25GB or 120GB). Before October 2021, see Three's older price guides. Worldwide Data Travel Passes don't cover Japan (as of 26 October 2026, Three price guide, roaming abroad, Go Roam).
On Three Pay As You Go, your Data Pack and add-ons don't work in Japan. Three can change or remove the £45 excluding VAT (£54 including VAT) monthly limit (Three Pay As You Go price guide, data roaming limit).
Sky Mobile and Tesco Mobile
Japan isn't a Roaming Passport Plus destination: Sky Mobile charges its Rest of the World rates as soon as you make or receive a call, send a text or use data. Its £45 monthly data roaming spend cap can be removed (as of 26 October 2026, Sky Mobile tariff guide, Sky rest of the world).
Tesco Mobile puts Japan in Region 4, with no roaming add-on. On pay monthly, your safety buffer (£0 to £100 a month) limits what you spend outside your allowance (Tesco Mobile roaming, safety buffer).
iD Mobile, SMARTY and VOXI
At iD Mobile, Japan is a Roam Beyond destination where your UK allowance doesn't apply, and add-ons start as soon as you buy them. Without one, data costs £9.60 per MB (an iD Mobile employee's answer of 2 April 2026 on iD's forum), until the £45 data roaming limit stops it (as of 26 October 2026, Roam Beyond add-ons, roaming in Japan, data roaming limit).
At SMARTY, data outside the EU only works with an Out of plan balance, which you add in steps of £5, up to £15 (SMARTY rates in Japan, SMARTY price guide). VOXI's Global Roaming Extras cover Japan and start as soon as you buy them; buying another before the first ends loses what's left of it (terms dated 30 July 2025, VOXI Global Roaming Extras, VOXI charges).
Lyca Mobile and Lebara
On Lyca Mobile Pay As You Go, each Japan add-on is limited to five purchases in 30 days (Lyca Mobile roaming, Japan 7 Days Roam). Lebara sells roaming add-ons outside its Roam Like Home zone: check on lebara.co.uk whether one covers Japan (Lebara roaming guide).
Pocket Wi-Fi, SIM cards and free Wi-Fi in Japan
Japan's national tourist office, JNTO, calls a rented pocket Wi-Fi the safest option to stay connected all over Japan. Rental kiosks are at all major airports, or you can reserve one online for delivery to your hotel (JNTO: Wi-Fi in Japan). One router serves several phones, but it's a second device to charge and return.
JNTO also points to SIM cards with data plans, sold at major airports and in electronics megastores such as Bic Camera and Yodobashi Camera. Your phone must be unlocked to use one.
Free Wi-Fi is available in the terminals of major international airports and in most major city hotels. Some coffee chains, fast food restaurants and convenience stores have their own, but JNTO warns the signal can be patchy and slow. Traditional ryokan and smaller minshuku may have none, so check when you book.
Pocket Wi-Fi in Japan: a practical guide — if you're weighing a rented router against an eSIM
When an eSIM for Japan makes sense, and when it doesn't
An eSIM is worth a look when your network charges per MB in Japan, when its passes hold little data (EE), or when a daily charge runs through a long trip (Vodafone, Three). You install the eSIM at home, and it activates when it connects to a network in Japan. It's data only, with no phone number, so your UK number stays on your SIM. You get a refund within 14 days if it hasn't been activated, and 4% cashback in SimCoins on every purchase. You need an eSIM-compatible phone that isn't locked to your network.
You don't need an eSIM from us if:
- You're on O2's Ultimate Plan or Three Your Way Complete: Japan is included.
- You're on O2 pay monthly, and O2 Travel or a Zone 2 Bolt On fits your trip.
- An iD Mobile Roam Beyond add-on or a VOXI Global Roaming Extra already covers the data you need.
- You're in a group and would rather share one pocket Wi-Fi.
Best eSIM for Japan: providers compared — if you want to see several eSIM providers side by side
Step by step: pass or eSIM
- Check your plan in your network's app. Add O2 Travel or a Bolt On before you go. Buy EE passes, iD Mobile add-ons and VOXI or Vodafone Extras once you've arrived. On giffgaff, turn on the credit spend cap.
- Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi.
- On arrival, select the eSIM for mobile data, turn on its data roaming and turn it off for your UK SIM.
- A call or text from your UK number still starts the Vodafone, Three or O2 Travel daily charge. With no pass and no eSIM, keep data roaming off and use Wi-Fi.

Roaming in Japan: frequently asked questions
On pay monthly, O2 stops your data in Japan unless you add O2 Travel (£7 a day, unlimited data at up to 2Mbps) or a Zone 2 Bolt On (£9 for 1GB, £20 for 3GB, £29 for 5GB). The Ultimate Plan includes Japan. O2 Pay As You Go charges £7.20 per MB (as of 26 October 2026).
No. Japan is in Vodafone's Zone D, which no plan includes, not even Premier. On pay monthly you pay £8 for each day you use your phone there (£6 on plans from before 11 August 2021). On pay as you go, data costs 12p per MB without an Around the World Extra (as of 26 October 2026).
Your giffgaff plan doesn't. You pay 20p per MB from your credit, or buy a Japan travel data add-on, valid for 30 days. Add-ons are sold only in the giffgaff app (as of 26 October 2026).
